Subject: Re: copperplus
Dear Richard, yes, we are very happy with our Copperplus.
Firstly, it was very easy to paint it on, over the existing four year old original Coppercoat and Copperguard coatings, because they were still completely intact, apart from some thin area around the water line (due to much scrubbing no doubt) .
And then:
After four months in the tropical waters of Southern Brazil we have a soft film of algae , reaching a few centimetres from the waterline downwards. It is easily sponged off while we are having a swim.
Diving under the hull we found a 0.5 mm (yes, half a millimetre, hardly measurable) slimy layer which comes off easily ( with a broom, wielded from the dinghy) . It is so fine that we can’t imagine it having any effect on the speed of the yacht.
The keel is completely clean, not even a film.
In two areas, about 20 by 30 cm in size, we found a few small shells. They were easily scraped off (10 cm under the water line) and we think they occurred in those places because we had not sandpapered there as rigorously as the rest of the hull, after painting.
At this moment we are totally delighted with the new antifouling.
Seeing other people’s yachts confirms that we did the right thing:
One Dutch yachtsman told us he always uses traditional anti fouling. ‘But I pay through the nose for lift-outs all the time. My hull is so quickly fouled’, he added however.
And indeed, he painted his hull the same time, same place as we. Four months later, sailing the same seas, we compared.
He dived under our yacht and couldn’t believe his eyes. While his keel was totally encrusted with all sorts of barnacles, with no space left for newcomers, our´s was squeaky clean..
His hull had a thick layer of marine life of all sorts. He regrets his choice but is apprehensive of having to clean the hull completely before applying Permanent Coating anti-fouling. In abstract he knows it would be wise but shies away from the hard work at the moment. May be you could suggest a fast way of cleaning hulls, as this seems to put people off the Copperplus anti-fouling….
Well, this is our report. Please feel free to quote any bits of it which might be useful to you.
